Gwangmyeong cave – Korea’s top 3 major caves

Gwangmyeong Cave is one of the representative caves in Korea located in Cheolsan-dong, Gwangmyeong-si, Gyeonggi-do. It is counted as one of the top 3 caves in Korea and is estimated to be a continuous cave of about 9km. It is known to have been found at a point less than 20m underground, and is located about a 10-minute walk from Cheolsan Station on Subway Line 1.

History of Gwangmyeong cave

Gwangmyeong Cave was discovered in 1922 by the villagers of Cheolsan-dong. Over the next few years, expeditions were made to determine the structure and length of the cave.

In the 1930s, it was created as a tourist cave, and in 1966, Gwangmyeong City bought the cave and started managing the entire cave. In the late 1970s, the city of Gwangmyeong prepared the entire cave and improved the structure and lighting. Over the next five days, 833m of new caves and 54m of climbing streams were discovered. In 1996, Korea’s first rock climbing competition was held here.

Structure of Gwangmyeong cave

Gwangmyeong Cave is estimated to be a continuous cave that is about 9 km long. The cave is made up of numerous cartilage and rooster bedrock, with pits and scuffs visible. There are rock pillars, mowing, and hollows, and it is also known as a place where you can enjoy rock climbing and spellology.

The inside of the cave is relatively cool, about 10 degrees, and there is a stream connected to the underground water. You can enjoy the beauty of nature, such as Deunggyocheon and bedrock, along with lighting inside Gwangmyeong Cave, and activities such as bedrock climbing, spelology, and groundwater quality investigation are available.

Charm of Gwangmyeong cave

Gwangmyeong Cave is evaluated as the simplest but boldest underground rock structure in Korea. It attracts many domestic and foreign tourists every year, and is considered the best place for those who prefer to enjoy nature and cave experiences. Also, recently, the “Each Gwangmyeong Cave” campaign is being held at Gwangmyeong Cave.

This campaign allows participants to register their own messages, pictures, music, etc. using smartphones and QR code scanning functions, and make them available to people around the world. This campaign aims to preserve the history and culture of Gwangmyeong Cave and provide a new experience.
